Biography

Starting in January 2018, Shabnam is a PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering with IATSL working with Dr. Alex Mihailidis. Her thesis explores the use of automated vehicles by older adults with and without cognitive impairments with the ultimate objective to propose design solutions that can make automated vehicles more usable and acceptable by older adults. She is currently an Highly Qualified Person with AGE-WELL Network and a post-graduate affiliate at Vector Institute of Artificial Intelligence. Her primary research interest lies in reinforcement learning, man-machine interactions, and human compatibility of artificial intelligence.

Shabnam started her MASc at IATSL in the fall of 2016 and she fast-tracked to pursue a PhD. Prior to that, she obtained her bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology, where she specialized in biomedical signal processing. For her bachelor's thesis project, she developed an emotion recognition algorithm based on the electroencephalograms of 20 subjects, with a potential application of using the algorithm for children with Autism spectrum disorders.
