Biography
Joy is an MASc student in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Toronto’s Institute of Biomedical Engineering, supervised by Dr. Alex Mihailidis. Her research focuses on developing machine learning models for anomaly detection in assistive technologies, specifically aimed at supporting people living with dementia and their caregivers. She is working to improve digital reminder systems by incorporating personalized behavior tracking and early warning systems for safety concerns.
Before joining the Intelligent Assistive Technology and Systems Lab (IATSL), Joy completed her undergraduate degree in Engineering Science at the University of Toronto, specializing in Machine Intelligence. During her studies, she developed a deep interest in how AI and machine learning can be applied to healthcare, particularly in enhancing the independence and well-being of individuals with cognitive impairments.
Her broader interests include exploring the use of machine learning in rural healthcare settings and ensuring that AI systems are developed with ethical considerations in mind. Joy is also passionate about applying AI to create solutions that are accessible and beneficial for underserved communities.
